5 DOCUMENTARIES THAT WILL MAKE YOU THINK TWICE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH

PHOTO: COWSPIRACY

Sometimes the best way to educate yourself is a documentary film. It has the engagement and entertainment value of cinema with the factual basis of the accredited article or scientific book we may find too dull to read. Here are our top 5 health and nutrition documentaries.

Quick disclaimer, we know a couple of these are America-focused but the problems they cover are widespread across the Western world and very relevant in the UK today.

1. Cowspiracy

You may think the effects of your meat-eating ways stop with your own personal health; I did for years. Unfortunately, it goes much further than this. Cowspiracy is a film about how meat product consumption impacts the health of our planet. And once you know, it's a difficult thing to forget. Activists and skeptics alike will appreciate this highly-acclaimed documentary.

2. That Sugar Film

For anyone who enjoyed Morgan Spurlock's Supersize Me, this is the same concept but instead of eating McDonalds, filmmaker Damon Gameau eats sugar-laden foods that are marketed as healthy. This is a very real and eye-opening look at what sugar can do to the human body in only a short amount of time.

3. Forks Over Knives

Forks Over Knives looks at the direct health impact of the Western diet and how rampant hypertension, heart disease, cancer, diabetes is not a required risk of modern living but has so much to do with what our diet has become. If you are interested in what transitioning to a more plant-based diet can do for you, this is your documentary.

4. Fed Up

Fed Up looks at the way the food industry has played into the overweight epidemic in the Western World. If you want to be inspired and empowered to make your own choices at the food shop, regardless of media imprinting, I suggest checking this one out.

5. Food, Inc.

Perhaps the most well-known of the bunch, Food, Inc. looks at the food industry and everything that goes on behind the scenes. But it's not all doom and gloom. Again, the filmmakers are looking to empower viewers to make more positive choices for themselves and the world. If you want to reclaim the power from the food industry and have a complete understanding of what is going on and how you are possibly being fooled, this is a great film to check out.
