Year upon year the festive period zooms by and before we know it we’re in January wondering how on earth we got here. Feeling just as frazzled as when we left for the Christmas break, we scrabble around slightly panicked trying to remember what our new years resolutions are. In true Bridget Jones style….’must eat/drink/smoke less….?’
Yes to all of the above, however, what if we flip reversed this pattern and looked at what you wanted to achieve in December AHEAD of the new year? This type of planning allows you to truly be present and enjoy Decembers festivities without that little (what am I doing with my life?) niggle at the back of your mind.
So here are INSPIRE’s favoured suggestions to help you focus and get organised for the new year, that way you can really let your hair down and enjoy yourself knowing that the future is taken care of (as much as it can be).
GET A VISION BOARD - This really works and you don’t need to be the most creative person on the planet for this to be affective. Trust us. Get a cork board and a stack of magazines and get snipping! Let your mind wander into what you want out of life - where do you want to travel? Live? Work? There is something really powerful in the simple act of stating what you want. If you think you don't have time to get creative then we suggest using Trello. A really visual project management tool where you can create colourful lists and best of all ‘archive the list’ when that dream has come true - so get dreaming!
SET YOURSELF 3 GOALS - How many of us come back from the Christmas break totally resolute that we’re going to quite our god awful job, travel the world and met the man/woman of our dreams. Whilst there is nothing wrong with dreaming big and believing you are destined for bigger things, our advice, before you go all Bridget on the situation, start putting some action in before the end of the year. If it’s work related, get your CV done and reach out to a couple of recruiters/relevant contacts. If it's travelling, then get planning on where and as for Mr/Mrs right there’s nothing wrong with getting clear on what kind of person you want to be with. However, make sure you don’t try to control the outcome too much. Chances are if you’re happy on the inside then what you attract in will match what you’re looking for.
MONEY MAPPING - January is a longer month, after all the frivolities of the new year we know it’s going to be a wee bit tight. Why not plan for that? As life coach Lucy Sheridan says ‘paying the bills is sexy’ and we totally agree. Doing a little financial planning can only be a good thing and will totally put your mind at rest. If finances are a tricky topic for you, we recommend you read Money A Love Story by Kate Northrup.
LET GO - Tony Robbins says ‘Change your story/change your life’ and he’s not wrong. We are controlled by our thoughts. Set yourself an intention to release anything that isn’t serving you any more. Old patterns of behaviour around work, food, money, relationships - what ever it is. Simply set the intention to move on. This is an action in itself, trust us, if you’re aware of a pattern you’re already half way there and can really start making space for the new stuff.
CLEAN UP - Get cleaning! We love nothing more than a good old clear out, it really is good for the soul. Forget waiting till spring for a clean, do it now, you’ll come back to your flat/house post Christmas feeling really good and raring to go. Be mindful through out the year of not accumulating more stuff that you really don’t need.
That’s it! We promise if you give these suggestions a go, January will feel a lot less scary.
